Sandra B. Dreis is a poet and novelist whose work moves through nature, family, humor, grief, justice, and the small moments that stay with us.
A long writing life
Words have always been part of the way she sees.
Sandra graduated from Hofstra University and continued her creative-writing studies through Middlebury’s Bread Loaf program. She has written for many years while also working in theatre, dance, television, arts education, and the classroom.
She is the author of four books: Good Dirt, Dry-Docked in New Jersey, Cultured Pearls, and the Silver Nautilus-winning The Ecowarriors.
She was a finalist for the James Applewhite Poetry Prize (North Carolina Literary Review, 2022). Her poems have appeared in North Carolina Literary Review, The Main Street Rag, Kakalak, Flying South, Medical Literary Messenger, Clockhouse, ArLiJo, and The RavensPerch.
Creative spirits
Sandra and Haley inspire each other.
Her daughter, Haley, is a creative spirit too. Their bond is full of warmth, ideas, laughter, and the kind of encouragement that helps each of them keep making new things.
Beyond the desk
Long walks, the dog park, and tap shoes.
When Sandra is not writing, she loves taking Jillie on long walks and trips to the dog park. She also dances with her local Snappy Tappers, keeping rhythm and performance close at hand.

Sandra B. Dreis (Sandra Brodkin Dreis) is a poet and novelist based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A native New Yorker with a background in theatre, dance, choreography, television, and arts education, she is the author of Good Dirt, Dry-Docked in New Jersey: An Eclectic Elegy, Cultured Pearls, and the Silver Nautilus-winning The Ecowarriors: Book One — The Bluffs of Baraboo.
